Science Says Black Elderberry is Effective at inhibiting Coronavirus

If you've ever been judged (called a "crazy purple juice drinker") by someone for using elderberry syrup as medicine, show them this! The use of medicinal herbs for wellness, including elderberries, has been studied and passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. Historical documentation, legends and stories about herbal remedies have been and need to be preserved and shared. FINALLY, modern science is beginning to recognize what herbalists and enthusiasts have understood for a long, long time.

To all who might be skeptical of using plants for natural remedies:

Coronavirus and elderberry

"Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) is a pathogenic chicken coronavirus. Currently, vaccination against IBV is only partially protective; therefore, better preventions and treatments are needed."

Plants produce antimicrobial secondary compounds, which may be a source for novel anti-viral drugs. Extracts of plants including: Rhodiola rosea roots, Nigella sativa seeds, and Sambucus nigra fruit were tested for anti-IBV activity, since these safe, widely used plant tissues contain polyphenol derivatives that inhibit other viruses.

Read the rest of the study here:

"These results demonstrate that S. nigra extract can inhibit IBV at an early point in infection, probably by rendering the virus non-infectious. They also suggest that future studies using S. nigra extract to treat or prevent IBV or other coronaviruses are warranted."
